William Shakespeare wrote plays in four distinct styles: comedies, histories, tragedies, and romances. In this class we will examine how these styles function as dramatic art. In the spring semester we will look at comedy (Much Ado About Nothing) and history (Richard III). In the fall semester, we will look at one tragedy (Hamlet) and one romance (The Tempest). The class will be lecture format. Notetaking skills will also be reviewed. We will also view a film adaption of each play (with Japanese subtitles). |
