Intermediate Writing Skills

授業の目標（講義概要）
In this class we will build upon the basic writing skills learned in the two first year writing classes. We will focus on the kinds of writing that will be required when the students go on the Study Abroad Programme: notes, letters, diaries, short essay writing. The students will also learn basic translation skills.

授業計画
1. Introduction: useful reminders about writing in English as opposed to Japanese.
2. Writing a note.
3. Writing a letter.
4. Keeping a diary.
5. The short essay: topic sentences and paragraphing.
6. The short essay: planning and ordering content.
7. The short essay: useful grammatical items.
8. The short essay: production of a two-page essay.
9. Translating: introductory comments.
10. Translating culturally-specific and other problematic items.
11. Translating simple prose.
12. Polishing up a translation.
13. Translating items other than simple prose.
14. Production of a piece of Japanese-to-English translation.
15. Conclusions.

評価方法
Class work 40%; Attendance 30%;Final TOEIC test 30%
