Shakespeare and Film: Macbeth

Ž๖‹ฦ‚ฬ–ฺ•Wiu‹`ŠT—vj
In this seminar we will try to accomplish several goals simultaneously: to study a Shakespeare play, Macbeth; to consider how successfully Macbeth has been rendered into film media; to research a variety of related Shakespearean and Elizabethan topics and report on them in a variety of research styles (mostly following MLA format). Students should expect their research and writing skills to improve dramatically, and we will use Macbeth to help do that. So, this seminar is at once a literature class, a film appreciation class, a research skills class, and a seminar devoted to intensive study. Good luck!

Students will be evaluated on the performance of various class assignments such as presentations, precis, performance reviews, position papers, as well as a final, independent research essay demonstrating the research skills acquired during the year related to our seminar topic. Students choose the assignments which they want to complete in order to build the grade that they desire (usually about 150% total points possible). Some assignments are mandatory (such as the individual essay) while others are free choice or may be duplicated (such as a precis or position papers). Attendance: I subtract 5% from the final grade for each unexcused absence.
